Progress and Pitfalls in the War on Cancer
Monday, November 4, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.
Hogan Lovells Law Offices, 555 13th Street NW #800E, Washington, DC 20004
This first ever joint meeting of the Harvard and MIT Clubs of DC echoes the many joint activities now afoot in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There is the Harvard MIT edX online learning venture. The Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology offers a joint MD-PhD degree. The Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the MIT Sloan School of Management offer a dual MBA from Sloan and MPA/MPP from Kennedy. There is a Joint Research Grants Program in Basic Neuroscience. Now would be a good time to meet some of the alums from the other end of Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge.
Our keynote speaker is Michael Gottesman, who directs the entire Intramural Research Program in basic and medical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), located at several campuses across the country as well as in Bethesda, MD. He obtained his BA from Harvard College and his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1970. He did his internship and residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital at the Harvard Medical School. After a few years as a research associate at the NIH, he took a faculty position at the Harvard Medical School, but returned to join the National Cancer Institute at the NIH in 1976. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. As the Chief of the Laboratory of Cell Biology at the NIH, his research has focused on how cancer cells elude chemotherapy. He has over 500 publications in basic cancer research. He will speak to us on the latest progress and pitfalls in the war on cancer.
Cocktails begin at 6:30. The price includes dinner, wine and beer.
The price of this event is $45 per person for MIT Club members and up to 3 guests each, and $52 per person for non-members. Register by October 31.
